From Crisis to Empowerment: Power and Powerlessness
The pursuit of security and control has been part of humanity since time immemorial. These primary needs are shaken in times of crisis. Consequently, a feeling of powerlessness spreads in us, which paralyzes, unsettles or aggravates us, or turns us into actionists. The Stoics formulated a wise piece of advice 2000 years ago: change what you can change. And make a difference, for you and your surroundings.
To empower ourselves, we may ask ourselves:
- In what situations do we feel powerless? What makes us powerful? A self-check.
- What are our needs? What is our own specific character?
- To whom (people) or what (beliefs, thoughts) do we give up our power?
- How can we muster the courage to stand up for ourselves, without compromising the uniqueness of others?
